Choosing child care is one of the biggest decisions a family makes. Use this checklist when you tour centres in Whitby, London or anywhere in Ontario.
1. Check the basics
- Is the centre licensed under Ontario’s child care framework? Ask to see the licence.
- Which age groups does the centre serve, and what are the staff-to-child ratios?
- What are the hours and the enrollment options (full-time, part-time, tailored days)?
2. Look at the learning approach
Ask how children learn during the day. Play-based, child-led learning supports curiosity, language and social skills. Ask to see how the centre supports literacy, numeracy and emotional intelligence without pressuring young children.
3. Watch the educators
On a visit, notice how educators speak to children. Are they down at eye level, patient and responsive? Ask about educators’ qualifications and how the centre supports its team - happy, respected educators create calmer, warmer rooms.
4. Walk the space
Look for bright, clean, safe indoor areas and a daily outdoor play routine. Ask how the space is set up for toddlers versus preschoolers.
5. Ask about communication
How will you hear about your child’s day? How are concerns handled? A good centre makes it easy to talk with the director.
6. Understand the costs
Ask what the daily fee is, whether the centre participates in the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) system, and whether fee subsidy is available. Our Fees & Subsidies guide explains the basics.
